  • Hi Gary. This response is by no means meant to be vague, we are going to be a service that charges some sort of monthly fee. The storage amounts and costs are going to be developed over the coming months as we see what the users require in terms of storage amounts ect.

Our mission for Gobbler is to create a great product and a service. So we will be paying a lot of attention to the users to make sure we strike the right balance on every front.
    • ohhh, monthly fees, i don't the sound of that already.hmm..
    • Hi Connal,

I appreciate your feeling about fees. With Gobbler we built a very powerful and robust platform. What you see today is only the beginning of a long roadmap designed to make the creation process better then it has ever been before.

As a service we hope that we will be valued on what we offer as being much better then others out there. We are striving to be the best in class.

As a result we have hired some of the best programmers in the world, some of the best minds in software development.

      This doesn't come free.

The flipside is we are going to offer very competitive prices. But even more so the product will be way more robust and feature packed then anything else out there. You'll get way more bang for your buck with Gobbler as we are going to stay ahead of the curve.

You may not find any value in that. And that's ok. There are other services out there which you can use.

We are an option. Our plan is to be the best one.

Either way we thank you for giving us a try. There will be a free version available to use. In the mean time you can sign up for Gobbler before Dec 7 and use it for a year for free.

      Best

      Chris

  • What about a Base Subscription with a Flex Spending Option? Aside from some Unlimited Premium service which seems potentially hazardous, could we consider Base level services of say 50GB, 100GB, 250GB etc. but then have the option to send that odd massive project for a (small) one-time additional fee? A Flex would also be great for us as we definitely have a busy season and an off-peak season.

    • i think that is a good idea. the storage sites that charge right off the bat, have a low subscription, and low uptake. the only way i would get collaborators to join, is if there is an unlimited time free gb, even if its just 5gb.
That is where dropbox have done well.
People are cautious to upload a load of data when they know there is a time limit.
Also, I would suggest as well as charges, having the additional 'donation' option. I've supported a lot of software developers over the years this way, and I think its a great way of showing support.

      Hi concon-
Thanks for your feedback. We will have a free 5GB plan (and people will still be able to earn bonus storage on the free plan for referring new users to Gobbler). And again, if you sign up before December 7th, you'll get to keep the 25GB account for the entire year, for free!

    Hi Chris,

It was nice meeting you last week at NAMM, coincidentally I bumped into Andrew last night at Vanguard.

On this topic, I have give some thought to the cost structure of the program as it is crucial to the success of "Gobbler". My opinion is that it should be the same business model that I use at the recording studio (Studio 11 in Chicago). What we do is back up all of a clients data at no cost. When a client returns for a project, we upload the work on session time. In some cases this is many years later. This has proven to work well since the death of tape. Truth is most clients can't be trusted with their own masters. They will inevitably get lost or destroyed. We store all of their material at no cost because we know they will be back for it at some point.

The parallel here is that you should not charge for space. It should be free and unlimited. You should give a fixed monthly upload bandwidth to prevent abuse, and charge for downloaded data - this way customers are paying for what they need. Having a healthy upload amount should allow for the gradual backup of archives.

I will play with the software when I get back to Chicago.

    Just My 2 Cents,

    Regards,
    Alex Gross

    • Hi Alex, interesting idea but unfortunately that work work in our business model. Gobbler is not just a back-up solution we also offer extremely file sharing and organization tools. We plan on continuing to add features and services which will to help make the process of creating audio even better.

The idea behind Gobbler is for users to be able to access their files anytime from anywhere. Yet keep them in the most secure environment possible.

The best use of Gobbler is for each of your clients having their own Gobbler account.

What about people like me who will (frequently but not constantly) do maybe 50GB a week because we are often working on (overdubbing and the sort) LARGE projects with up to 192 tracks and collaborating overseas? I need a safe, secure, fast, and economical solution for that and I doubt my usage would fall under the umbrella of "gradual backup of archives". I currently have one project I was using Gobble as an off site backup on which isn't finished and exceeded 50GB in size quite rapidly.

Charging just for download will defeat one goal of Gobbler which is collaboration. This pricing policy suggested only assumes that you are using it for offline backups. I often collaborate with others and new sessions are constantly created and moved around. Nobody will want to download new sessions all the time if that is what we're being charged for.

I would still prefer a pricing system like dropbox's. A base free amount of space and increased with referrals. If you are using of offline backups and large sessions, to go premium and purchase a subscription. Space on Amazon is ridiculously cheap so large spaces shouldn't be that expensive at all.

    • yo! love your passion... just to note.. we will have a free version of Gobbler always! additionally folks with free accounts who earn additional space by inviting users will keep that space. we will be stoked to give space to anyone who is kind enough to tell people about Gobbler and they go ahead and sign up.

the free version will be fully functioning with no expiration. What we are doing now is offering something to the folks who have been with us and been so great as beta testers.

our plan for the folks who are signing up is the following. you get a year free. at the end of the year you will be grandfathered in at our lowest price. Which will be $7.95 per month.

If over the course of the year you invite enough people where you have earned another 100gb of space you will keep that space plus what you already had and it will be at $7.95 for the life of the account. We value the value of someone speaking kindly about our product.

I love your ideas.. and we are open minded about what the future holds. Who knows what could happen. We want to build products people love and better the process.

    • Did you get the email i sent through your tech support email to andrew? If not, can you ask him to forward it onto you.
Give me a 10 minute phone call inside your head, and i will take you from being the millionaire you are going to become, to the billionaire you could become.

Basically the point I'm trying to make is:

Concentrating on generating turnover from charging for storage, is about as exciting and innovative as charging, well, for storage.

By concerning yourself by how much you can make off people who are looking to have 250gb accounts, is like looking at the ground, when you should be looking up at the stars.
250gb+ members are going to be a VERY small market.

Your real market is the 16-20 yr olds in their bedrooms with laptops, who are still yet to build up their recording equipment setup.
Give these kids an online music community with free storage, and the possibility to collaborate with friends/online-friends, read reviews, ask questions, join online courses, buy music equipment through gobbler, etc, etc,etc
(fact: if gobbler has 5million audio members, who buy products through gobbler, gobbler just taking 1% through a transaction of audio equipment sales being redirected through the site, you will make at least 10 000x more than charging for storage to a very few 250gb members).
How would you guarantee the 16yr old gobbler member buys through gobbler? he gets a 5% off voucher code to use on the retailers site, gobbler gets 1% of every transaction.

That is just one tiny facit in so many, of how you should be looking to build the site, and generate turnover, in so many ways.
What I want you to get it, is that the storage is not how you should make your money, that is just what you use to build up a huge member base/community of musicians/producers/engineers, who are more than happy to be advertised music equipment to.

As I'm sure you are fully aware, magazines make far more from advertising revenue, than selling the magazine.
This has gone to the extent where a lot of magazines/newspapers are free, just in order to have a wider readership. more members=more advertising revenue.

Any one of these 16 yr old kids come to the site, and see they have to pay $8 a month, you've lost them, and you've lost their 10 friends they would have referred, and those 10x10 friends, and those 10x10x10 friends.
      That is huge advertising revenue.

Also, a review part of gobbler should be established very quickly.
For example,i type in shure sm7b review into google. and gobbler comes up in the search engine with a review, i click on it, and quickly find, there is entire world of music/film, i never knew existed, an online community I have been missing.
Building a review section, will basically provide you with free advertising/marketing.

The most important part is NOW, if people associate gobbler with paid storage, your growth will be stifled.
If you quickly build on your online profile pages, with instant messaging, members clicking on preferences of what genres they fall under, mixer-rock-indie-logic user-mac computer-etc,etc (so they can be exclusively advertised to, as well as meet and collaborate/talk/educate/teach other online members), you will grow quicker than your servers can handle. doesn't that sound exciting?

A very critical point, there are as many, if not more, potential video users than audio users. Don't cut off half the market before you've begun.
Gobbler can have 2 distinctive video and audio memberships, as well as separate forums/sites, as well as cross collaboration/communication between audio/video makers.
Dont think you can add the video functionality later and have the same membership take-up. include the film makers now in this from the beginning, and let them also be a part of what will become the most influential film/music community in the world.

In 5 years from now, Gobbler can have a 10 millon and growing membership.
      5million audio/5million video members.
Can you even imagine what your company will be valued at, and the revenue you will be generating?

You have the chance now, to change the direction of your ship, and make a decisive decision to use the storage to build the worlds biggest music/video community.
Charging for storage and scaring away the biggest part of your market, young people, will mean you will have some cash upfront for what you are doing now.
But get investment, and look to 5 years from now, where your company will be worth 100x what it would be,than if you just charge for storage.

There is NO reason you can't offer a strong/stable platform of storing/sharing files, while still keeping it free and building a huge membership.

In closing, selling 250gb storage is a tiny limited market. It's the kids in their bedrooms you want to get to join, not just the producers in already established studios.

Selling storage will probably make you a millionaire, but using the storage as a platform/device to build the biggest audio/video community in the world, will make you a billionaire, and the father of what will be the most influential movement in music/film this millenium.

Let me know if you would like to discuss this and other ideas, and see if you can get that email from Andrew.

Being open minded about what the future holds is not enough.
Its not just what you let it become, it's what you make it become.

Hi. Liking the look of Gobbler, but am wary about what the future costs might be. Do you have a plan as to what the subscription fees are likely to be?

When you're considering your PC version, I'd love it if you included Pyramix support.

I would highly recommend a free service similar to Soundcloud's free accounts. I mean, I do like Gobbler but I'd quite easily cut it out of the equation and just use dropbox if it required a fee.
    • Hi Jay, i hear what you are saying. we are a different product then those two services. Dropbox is a great product, I use it myself. Gobbler is designed for the needs of folks that work in audio. We have spent a lot of time developing something which really fits into user workflow. Give Gobbler a try I think you'll find it the right solution over Dropbox.

Hi, Gobbler looks really cool. Do you have any even vague idea what the pricing might be once you go gold? I'm a freelance singer/songwriter/composer so I don't have a pro studio budget - and am currently looking into purchasing some kind of cloud-based backup solution/s.

Reading this thread I think the most appropriate way to do it is like this:

    Have you 4 tiers of 50,100,250, 500

However, I think that sometimes folks will have 60Gigs and to ask them to pay for the whole 100 might make them hesitate, it certainly would make me hesitate (though I'm, more in the 100-250 gig range). Since you're in the Amazon S3 model, you know how much Amazon charges you, and to that you need to spread the cost across the range of customers you'll get and make a profit for the services of having the upload/download app etc... I think you should offer folks an option that looks like this:

50GB+ @ n cents per Gig over 50 (so 50GB+ you pay the base 50GB fee plus 10 cents per gig for example)

100GB+ @ n cents per Gig over 100 (so 100GB+ you pay the base 100GB fee plus 8 cents per gig for example)

And drop the price per additional Gig for the higher storage capacity you reach. Once someone reaches the next level, then you automatically move them to the next tier charging them the next level price.

What you might want to do as a business in this model is to find the cost so that say if I have 50gig+ plan, and I store 90Gigs of data, that the 90Gigs of data cost me the same or more than the 100Gig plan. That way you have coverage to make sure people upgrade, and the customer has a way to determine when to jump up to the next level.

Price/pain point will be different for folks depending on how busy their studio is. if you come to me and say 250Gigs will cost you 50.00 a month, I might balk at that, but a larger studio might say... OK sounds good. Don't price yourself out of the market :)

    Hope that helps.

Hm, so what if you aren't active for a longer period of time, and then start uploading a few projects again... would you have to continue to pay?

As a point of reference: I like how Soundcloud handles its premium accounts.
First of all people can get a free limited account (that has a lot of features to be honest).
Then there are 4 other plans of 29, 79, 250 and 500 euros a year. What I like about this is that it suits every kind of musician, studio or label.
And this allows the service to grow along with the artist. I myself started out with a few months of free. Then started the 29 euro a year account and a year later things are getting more serious and I will be upgrading to the 79 euro plan.

So I hope Gobbler will cater to all those different needs too. Weather it's just a singer-songwriter, electronic music producers, semi pro studios or big studios.

But, in reality any recording musician will generate much bigger amounts of data than say somebody who produces some electronic genre with soft-synths and samples.

Has there been any progress on the 25gb plus pricing plan? Is there a differentiation between total space used, and bandwidth limit per month? Thanks a million, looking forward to hearing back.

Need more space? We are launching a new plan for users who want to purchase space above the capacity that they have now. We are starting a sign up here for users who would like to know more as we've been getting A TON of requests from the pro audio community, especially now, as transfers have gotten faster.

I'd like to suggest that backup space given be very generous and cheap. The thing that should cost is Bandwidth. Many people will need lots of backup space but little monthly bandwidth. If you make people pay for bandwidth they don't need just to get more backup space, it will be a tough sale.

    Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your comment. As pricing stands now, backup and transfer are bundled together when you purchase a subscription (so for example, if you purchase a 25GB account, you'll get 25GB of backup space and 25GB of monthly transfer). We're working on pricing the subscription tiers now, and our goal is to make sure that the price is commensurate with the value.

We're going to be watching usage closely to make sure that the plans we offer match our users needs. If (and when) it makes sense to offer a "mostly storage" plan, we'll do it.

Hope this answers your question / comment.
